DEFINITION
fake encore v
The planning by a band to include a fake ending in their set where they leave the stage, only to come back a few minutes later for a formulaic and pre-planned “encore.” This ridiculous manoeuvre is often represented on a band's setlist by a line. Here is an example.
Fake encores have become so commonplace that audiences have now come to expect bands to perform an encore irrespective of whether the performance/vibe at a gig has been exceptional and actually merits one. The success of the fake encore depends on the implicit participation of the audience clapping, whooping, shouting more etc to bring an air of legitimacy to this showbiz stunt. Get rid!!
